David Letterman reveals how he really feels about Jay Leno being the new host of "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson in 1991. Johnny asks David if he envisions himself hosting his show 20 years from now. JOHNNY CARSON PLAYLISTS Animals

How ironic is it that Dave said he would have been upset "IF nbc had hired him as the host of the Tonight Show, and THEN LATER TOOK THE JOB BACK"... Almost 2 decades later nbc did EXACTLY THAT to Connon (and guess who was at the center of it all, once again... yep, JAY LENO). #FuckingNbc!!!

I love when Carson asks Dave if he thinks he thinks he'll be hosting late night in 20 years, and he bursts out laughing. Now it's 25 years later, and he's still at it.

wow, best example of back when dave used to be actually funny and i can't believe when johnny asked can you imagine being a talk show host for 30 years, dave breaks out in laughter, and says absolutely not. well, after 33 years, last night may 20,1015 dave finally retired. guess he was fibbing to ol' johnny

I love how David Letterman practically foretells what happened with Jay Leno and Conan.

"If they had come to me a week later and said, actually, Dave, we dn't want you to have the show." Ironically, many years later, that's exactly what they did to Conan.

Letterman sounds exactly like Conan...when Conan was interviewed by Dave after being screwed by Leno (do a Youtube search). They both said they were okay, but you could tell by their antagonistic humor that they were not.

I have bad news for you, Johnny. The Tonight Show is hosted by a moron who can't keep his composure for more than ten seconds on both Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show. Lorne Michaels fired him for god's sake.

Ironically, Letterman went on for another 23 years.

No rich performer in the history of TV deserved his cash and fame more than Carson. He was class personified.

Johnny. So classy. Such a sweet guy. Dave says he wasn't listening so Johnny says I forgot what I asked. Always making folks feel comfortable. A real gift.

But it all worked out for the best for Letterman. He got a 11:30 show on CBS for more money than he would have got from NBC and he got to own the show and the following 12:30 show on CBS, which he kept for 22 years. He may have been hurt by not getting the Tonight Show, but financially he did much better with CBS.

These are not his true feelings. This is Letterman playing politics, fending off the perception of 'sore loser.' He's combating that by being graceful. However, his face betrays him. When he says, "so I was never, ever, angry," it is plain to see. While it might not show aggressive anger, his face at that moment exudes profound disappointment over the fact that he didn't get the job.

Now I get why Howard Stern loves Letterman so much. Letterman was trying his hardest at NBC (same as Howard) and they both got rejected. Now look at them... Letterman is the King of Late Night (retiring I know), and Stern is the King of all media (just in case you don't know, Stern had several different successful television shows, wrote and acted in a critically acclaimed movie, wrote two best selling books, and became the most successful radio host of all time)! That is why he alone is the King of all media.
